Rooted and Bearing Fruit: An Overview of the Fruit of the Spirit
The fruit of the Spirit is not a self-improvement checklist we manufacture, but the natural overflow of a life connected to Jesus and yielded to His Spirit.
Review & safety checks
This is a well-structured, theologically sound lesson plan aligned with your non-denominational evangelical basis. The teaching correctly emphasizes the fruit of the Spirit as organic overflow from abiding in Christ rather than self-effort, with solid biblical grounding in Galatians 5 and John 15. The activity moves from concept to personal application in a healthy way. All Scripture references are accurate and properly cited. No plagiarism detected in the original teaching prose. No sensitive topics requiring pastoral care flagging. The plan is ready for leader use with confidence.
No theology, sensitivity, or plagiarism issues flagged. Reviewed against the Non-denominational Statement of Faith.
Lesson plan
Warmly welcome everyone and open with a brief prayer inviting the Holy Spirit to lead the time. Read Galatians 5:22-23 aloud slowly. Ask the group to simply notice which one word in the list stands out to them tonight, then set the frame: 'Tonight we're stepping back to see the big picture of what the Spirit grows in us — and where this 'fruit' actually comes from.' Keep this short and unhurried; the goal is to settle hearts, not to start teaching yet.
Walk the group through three movements. (1) IT'S FRUIT, NOT WORKS — Note that Paul calls this the 'fruit' (singular) of the Spirit, not the 'achievements' of the flesh. A tree doesn't strain to produce apples; it bears them because of what it's connected to. Contrast this with the 'works of the flesh' Paul lists just before (Galatians 5:19-21). The nine qualities — love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control — describe one unified character, the character of Jesus Himself. (2) THE SOURCE IS THE VINE — Read John 15:5. Fruit grows from abiding, not striving. Apart from Christ we produce nothing of lasting value; in Him, fruit comes naturally over time. Help the group feel the relief in this: we are not asked to grit our teeth into godliness, but to stay connected. (3) OUR PART IS TO KEEP IN STEP — Read Galatians 5:16 and 5:25. Abiding is not passive. We 'walk by the Spirit' and 'keep in step with the Spirit' — daily choices to follow His lead, say no to the flesh, and stay in the means of grace (Scripture, prayer, community). Close the teaching by emphasizing growth is gradual and gracious; fruit ripens in seasons, and God is patient with the process. Keep your tone encouraging, not condemning.
Hand out index cards (or use phones). Display the nine fruit. Have each person privately circle/write the ONE fruit they sense the Spirit growing in them right now, and the ONE fruit that feels most underripe. Then break into pairs or trios. Each person shares their 'underripe' fruit and names one concrete situation this week where they'll need the Spirit's help in that area (e.g., patience with a coworker, gentleness with a child). Partners briefly pray for one another by name. This moves the lesson from concept to personal, Spirit-dependent application.
Regather the whole group. Invite two or three people to share a takeaway from their pair time (without pressure). Use one or two of the discussion questions below to surface insights, especially the connection between abiding and bearing fruit. Affirm honesty and keep the tone safe and encouraging.
Summarize the big idea in one sentence: fruit grows from staying connected to Jesus. Close in prayer, asking the Spirit to do in the group what they cannot do in themselves. Encourage everyone to take their index card home as a prayer reminder for the week.
Discussion questions
- warmupWhen you read the list of nine qualities, which one comes most naturally to you, and which feels the hardest?
- digWhy do you think Paul calls it the 'fruit' of the Spirit (singular) rather than the 'fruits' or the 'works' of the Spirit? What difference does that make?
- digJesus says in John 15:5 that apart from Him we can do nothing. Where in your life have you been trying to produce fruit by sheer willpower instead of by abiding in Him?
- applyWhat does it practically look like for you to 'keep in step with the Spirit' on an ordinary Tuesday?
- applyWhat is one specific situation this week where you'll ask the Spirit to grow a particular fruit in you — and who could check in with you about it?
Scripture
Galatians 5:22-23 (BSB) — But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
John 15:5 (BSB) — I am the vine and you are the branches. The one who remains in Me, and I in him, will bear much fruit. For apart from Me you can do nothing.
Galatians 5:16 (BSB) — So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
Galatians 5:25 (BSB) — Since we live by the Spirit, let us walk in step with the Spirit.
Galatians 5:19-21 (BSB) — The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, and debauchery; idolatry and sorcery; hatred, discord, jealousy, and rage; rivalries, divisions, factions, and envy; drunkenness, carousing, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Leader notes
Prep checklist
- Read Galatians 5:16-26 in full and in context a few days before the session.
- Pray for each group member by name, asking the Spirit to grow specific fruit in them.

- Plan how to form pairs/trios quickly for the activity, especially for anyone who may feel left out.
- Prepare a one-sentence summary of the big idea to repeat at the start and end.
- Think through how to keep the teaching to 25 minutes — mark your three movements with rough timestamps.
