Saved by Grace: What Really Proves You Belong to Jesus

The Bible teaches that we are saved by grace through faith in Jesus, and the evidence of that salvation is a changed life and the indwelling Holy Spirit—not any single spiritual gift like speaking in tongues.

Review & safety checks

This lesson plan is well-crafted and theologically sound within Baptist evangelical distinctives. It correctly emphasizes salvation by grace through faith, uses Scripture appropriately to counter the claim that speaking in tongues is a requirement for salvation, and maintains a charitable tone toward those from charismatic backgrounds. All scripture references are accurate and properly cited. The teaching is clear, the activities reinforce the big idea, and the leader notes show pastoral sensitivity. No plagiarism, theology, or sensitive-content flags are warranted. The plan is ready for use.

No theology, sensitivity, or plagiarism issues flagged. Reviewed against the Baptist Statement of Faith.

Icebreaker: "Real or Fake?"7 min

Welcome students warmly. Play a quick game: hold up (or describe) pairs of items/claims and have the group vote 'real' or 'fake'—e.g., a designer logo vs. a knockoff, a true fact vs. a made-up one, a real bank note vs. a photocopy. After a few rounds, ask: 'How do you tell the real thing from the fake?' Land the hook: 'Tonight we're talking about how you can KNOW something is real—specifically, how you know someone truly belongs to Jesus. Some Christians say you must speak in tongues to prove you're saved. Let's open the Bible and see what God actually says.' Keep it light and fast-paced.

Teaching: The Evidence of Salvation24 min

PART 1 – How are we saved? (8 min) Read Ephesians 2:8-9 and Romans 10:9. Salvation is a gift received by grace through faith in Jesus—His death and resurrection—not something we earn or unlock with a performance. Emphasize: the question 'How am I saved?' is answered by faith in Christ alone. PART 2 – What is speaking in tongues? (6 min) Read Acts 2:4 for context: at Pentecost the Spirit enabled believers to speak in other languages so people heard the gospel. Speaking in tongues is one of several gifts the Holy Spirit gives. Be charitable here: faithful Christians disagree about whether and how this gift continues today. Our church (Baptist) teaches that spiritual gifts are real and good, but Scripture does not make any single gift the requirement or the proof of salvation. PART 3 – Why tongues is NOT 'the' evidence (7 min) Read 1 Corinthians 12:7 and 12:30. Paul says the Spirit gives gifts 'to each' for the common good, then asks, 'Do all speak with tongues?'—expecting the answer 'No.' If not every believer speaks in tongues, it cannot be the test of who is saved. Read Galatians 5:22-23: the real evidence the Spirit lives in you is fruit—love, joy, peace, patience—a transformed life and a heart that confesses Jesus as Lord. PART 4 – Assurance (3 min) Read 1 John 5:13. God WANTS you to know you have eternal life. Your assurance rests on Christ's finished work and His Spirit at work in you, not on a spiritual experience you may or may not have had. Close the teaching by inviting honest questions.

Group Activity: Sorting the Evidence6 min

Break into groups of 3-4. Give each group a set of cards (or a printed list) with statements like: 'I trust Jesus died and rose for me,' 'I speak in tongues,' 'The Spirit is growing love and patience in me,' 'I'm trying hard to be a good person,' 'I confess Jesus as Lord,' 'I've had an emotional worship experience.' Have them sort cards into 'Bible's evidence of salvation' and 'Not the test of salvation.' Groups report one card they debated. Leader affirms: faith in Christ and Spirit-produced fruit are the marks Scripture points to; gifts and experiences are real blessings but not the measuring stick.

Discussion5 min

Use the tagged discussion questions, moving from warm-up to digging into the text to personal application. Keep a charitable tone—some students may come from charismatic backgrounds or have family who do. Affirm that loving Jesus, not winning an argument, is the goal.

Closing & Prayer3 min

Restate the big idea: you are saved by grace through faith in Jesus, and the proof is a life the Spirit is changing—not a single gift. Reassure any student who has wondered if they're 'really saved' because they don't speak in tongues: your security is in Christ. Pray, thanking God for the gift of salvation and asking the Spirit to grow His fruit in each student. Invite anyone with questions or who wants to trust Christ to stay and talk with a leader.

Discussion questions

  • warmupIn the icebreaker, what clues helped you spot the 'fake' from the 'real'? Why do clues matter?
  • warmupHave you ever heard someone say you have to do or experience a certain thing to prove you're a 'real' Christian? How did that make you feel?
  • digAccording to Ephesians 2:8-9 and Romans 10:9, what actually saves a person? Whose work is it?
  • digPaul asks in 1 Corinthians 12:30, 'Do all speak with tongues?' What answer is he expecting, and why does that matter for the claim that tongues proves salvation?
  • digGalatians 5:22-23 lists the fruit of the Spirit. How is growing fruit different from having a single dramatic experience? Why might God use fruit as the evidence?
  • applyHow does 1 John 5:13 speak to someone who is unsure whether they're truly saved?
  • applyIf a friend told you they weren't sure they were saved because they've never spoken in tongues, what would you say to them from tonight's passages?
  • applyWhat is one piece of 'fruit' you'd ask the Holy Spirit to grow in your life this week?

Ephesians 2:8-9 (BSB)For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast.

1 Corinthians 12:7 (BSB)Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.

Galatians 5:22-23 (BSB)But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

1 John 5:13 (BSB)I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.

John 3:16 (BSB)For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Leader notes

Prep checklist

  • Read all the scripture passages in context beforehand (especially 1 Corinthians 12) so you can answer questions confidently and charitably.
  • Pray for students by name, especially any who may come from charismatic/Pentecostal backgrounds or have family who do—approach the topic with humility, not as a debate to win.
  • Prepare the 'Real or Fake?' icebreaker items (pairs of real/knockoff objects or a short list of true/false claims).
  • Create the 'Sorting the Evidence' cards or print the statement list and cut into strips—one set per small group.
  • Decide how you'll handle a student who shares they are unsure of their salvation; be ready to talk and pray one-on-one after class.
  • Review your church's Baptist position on spiritual gifts and salvation so you teach within the doctrinal basis while remaining gracious where Christians disagree.

Materials

  • Bibles (BSB) or printed passages for each student
  • 'Real vs. Fake' icebreaker objects or a printed true/false list
  • Pre-made 'Sorting the Evidence' card sets (one per small group)
