Review & safety checks

This lesson plan is well-structured, theologically sound, and appropriate for young children. All Scripture references are accurate and properly cited. The big idea aligns clearly with evangelical theology—God's promise fulfilled in Christ's incarnation as a gift of love. The discussion questions progress thoughtfully from recall to application, and the craft meaningfully reinforces the central message. No plagiarism, theology, or sensitive-material concerns detected. The plan is ready for use.

No theology, sensitivity, or plagiarism issues flagged. Reviewed against the Non-denominational Statement of Faith.

Lesson plan

Welcome & Gift-Guess Game4 min

Greet the children warmly as they sit in a circle. Hold up a wrapped 'mystery box' (empty or with a small treat inside). Let kids shake it and guess what's inside. Ask: 'What is the BEST gift you ever got?' Take a few quick answers. Then say: 'Today we're going to hear about the very best gift anyone has ever been given — and it wasn't in a box! Let's find out what it was.'

The Christmas Story from Luke13 min

Using a children's Bible or simple pictures/flannelgraph, tell the story of Luke 2 in your own warm, simple words: (1) The angel Gabriel told Mary she would have a special baby, God's own Son. (2) Mary and Joseph traveled to Bethlehem, but there was no room for them, so baby Jesus was born and laid in a manger (a feeding box for animals). Read Luke 2:7 aloud. (3) Shepherds were in the fields when angels appeared with amazing news. Read Luke 2:10-11. (4) The angels praised God — read Luke 2:14. (5) The shepherds hurried to see Jesus and told everyone. Emphasize the big idea: God promised a Savior for a long, long time, and at Christmas He kept that promise. Jesus is God's gift of love to us — connect to John 3:16.

Talk About It4 min

Sit the children down and walk through the discussion questions, moving from easy to deeper. Affirm every answer. Keep it lively and let kids point to the pictures from the story. End by reminding them: Jesus is the reason we celebrate Christmas.

Make a Manger Heart Craft6 min

Give each child a paper heart and strips of yellow/brown paper ('straw') plus a small baby figure cut-out (or draw one). Have them glue the 'straw' inside the heart and place baby Jesus on top, saying: 'We make room for Jesus in our hearts.' As they work, ask them who they could tell about Jesus this Christmas, just like the shepherds did. Let them take the craft home as a reminder.

Closing Prayer & Send-Off3 min

Gather the children. Say a short, simple prayer thanking God for sending Jesus, the best gift of all, and asking Him to help us share His love. Invite the kids to repeat a one-line prayer after you: 'Thank You, God, for the gift of Jesus. Amen.' Dismiss them warmly with their crafts.

Discussion questions

  • warmupWhere was baby Jesus laid when He was born?
  • warmupWho came to visit Jesus first, and how did they find out about Him?
  • digWhy do you think God sent Jesus as a tiny baby instead of as a grown-up king?
  • digThe angels said the good news was for 'all the people.' What do you think that good news is?
  • applyThe shepherds told everyone about Jesus. Who is one person you could tell about Jesus this Christmas?
  • applyHow can we 'make room' for Jesus in our hearts and in our families during Christmas?
